Japanese artist and writer Yayoi Kusama (Matsumoto, Nagano, 1929) is a unique figure, admired by art historians for her pioneering trajectory, which has embraced multiple artistic movements from the 1960s to the present day. A global cultural icon, Yayoi Kusama has devoted herself with conviction to her avant-garde vision over the last seven decades, perfecting her aesthetic style, a faithful reflection of her conception of life.
This exhibition is dedicated to the existential questions that guide Yayoi Kusama’s creative explorations. Through her paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and documents of her happenings and performances, the exhibition presents an in-depth analysis of her art, from the first drawings she made as a teenager during World War II to her latest immersive mirror installations. Organized chronologically and thematically, Yayoi Kusama: 1945–Present addresses the six major themes that mark the artist’s life: infinity, accumulation, radical connectivity, the biocosm, death, and the energy of life. These interrelated questions emerge and evolve in Kusama’s obsessive universe, which for decades has questioned the art scene and society in order to promote the “healing of all humanity.”
