Art Basel Miami is back

Art Basel Miami is back

Every early December, Miami Beach becomes the focal point of the contemporary art world thanks to Art Basel, the largest contemporary art fair in North America. The event is part of a trio of international fairs, alongside those in Basel, Switzerland, and Hong Kong.

A global gathering

Art Basel Miami Beach attracts approximately 277 galleries from 34 countries, showcasing the work of more than 4,000 artists.

This massive turnout brings together collectors, artists, curators and art lovers from all over the world, creating a vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Spectacular sales

The fair is also the scene of impressive transactions. For example, at the 2023 edition, the Hauser & Wirth gallery sold Philip Guston's "Painter at Night" (1979) for $20 million.

Additionally, Gagosian Gallery has achieved sales exceeding $35 million, including a major 1982 Richter painting that fetched $12.5 million.

An immersive experience

Beyond the sales, Art Basel offers an immersive experience. The Miami Beach Convention Center is transformed into a pop-up museum, where visitors can admire works by modern masters such as Matisse, Picasso and Kandinsky, alongside bold contemporary creations. Discreet security allows for a unique proximity to the works, rarely possible at traditional museums.

Dynamic satellite events

The entire city vibrates to the rhythm of contemporary art during the week of the event. Exhibitions, art installations, parties and performances enliven various neighborhoods, offering a multitude of opportunities to experience art in different forms. Satellite fairs, such as SCOPE Miami Beach, host more than 170 galleries from 38 countries, presenting a comprehensive panorama of modern art.

Approaching contemporary art

For those who feel less familiar with contemporary art, here are some tips to enrich your visit:

  • Leave aside immediate aesthetic judgment : Don't ask yourself whether you like a work or not. Instead, seek to understand the artist's intention.

  • Embrace abstraction : Art is not always intended to faithfully represent reality. For example, the invention of photography freed artists from this constraint, pushing them toward abstraction.

  • Be open to provocation : Some works seek to provoke or question. Even if they arouse negative emotions, they can encourage you to think differently.

  • Think of art as a process : Contemporary artists are often in a perpetual quest. Think of their creations as stages of a work in progress.

  • Expand your definition of art : Contemporary art encompasses a variety of media beyond painting and sculpture, including performance, video, and installation.

Finally, remember that according to Marcel Duchamp, it is the artist who decides what constitutes a work of art. This perspective encourages you to approach each creation with an open and curious mind.
