The idea of destroying something to create something new is such a beautiful thing to me. Destruction goes hand in hand with the lack of control I witness when pursuing new works and ideas.
Squash paintings are made based on chance, objects are destroyed to potentially become works of art and are inspired by Yves Klein's Anthropométrie paintings and the traditional Japanese printing method "Gyotaku".
Almost everyone on this earth has something sentimental to them since childhood, especially in the western world, and most of the time it is in the form of a stuffed animal.
There comes a time when many of these people decide it's time to let go and move on with their lives by getting rid of their stuffed animal.
Capturing that childhood feeling in my work is so important to me that I've noticed people want to name their painting after that special stuffed animal they had growing up. That inner child is always present in all of us, whether we like it or not.
Nostalgia is what we need in our modern lives to keep moving forward and holding on to the warmth and love of our past.
